Bamboo has been around for over 200 million years and is the fastest growing plant on earth. Its strength and striking beauty in both its natural and finished state have made it a dominant structural material throughout much of the world for centuries.
A typical bamboo has a tensile strength of 28,000 per square inch vs. 23,000 for steel. That makes it one of the strongest materials in the world.
Bamboo can grow up to 119cm (47 inches) in 24 hours and 24m (78½ feet) high in 40 to 50 days. However, this astounding growth rate is highly dependent on local soil and climatic conditions. Bamboo has various uses since ancient times. It has been used as material in house and bridge building, and nowadays scaffolds which can reach up to 40-storey skyscrapers. Bamboo is of a notable economic and cultural significance in East Asia and South East Asia where the stems are used extensively in everyday life as building materials and as a highly versatile raw product.
Some species of bamboo can withstand -18 to -20°C (-0.39 to -4°F) in the winter.
Nowadays, due to the lack of timber, great efforts are being made for substituting conventional timber with bamboo. A great amount of progress with bamboo has been made and there has been significant efforts for mankind to plant more bamboo for carbon sequestration to mitigate greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.
